Heads up! Your W-2 Verification Code is No Longer Required

Oct 1, 2019 12:22:17 PM

Before the passage of the PATH Act, the IRS worked with payroll service providers, tax software providers, the Social Security Administration, and employers to test a W-2 Verification Code. A 16-digit code found on the Form W-2.

Taxpayers and tax professionals would enter the code when prompted by the electronic tax return. The Verification Code helped the IRS verify the accuracy of the wage and income information and verify the taxpayer and employer.

The PATH Act contained language that required employers to submit their Forms W-2 information by January 31, which enabled the IRS to verify taxpayer income information faster and more efficiently. Because the PATH Act provision is less of a burden on taxpayers, we have decided to discontinue the verification code.
