The Importance of Mental Health Care Benefits in the Workplace

Jul 11, 2019 11:40:42 AM

In an article for, writer Valerie Bolden-Barrett points out a problem that the modern workforce is facing in higher amounts than ever before: burnout and stress. A study released by Wrike in 2018 reported that "only 6% of workers surveyed said they did not suffer from stress." To make matters worse, many have also remarked on the limited availability of mental health care provided by their employers.

Now that research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that stressed-out employees cost employers billions of dollars, business owners are starting to take action.

Employee Assistant Programs (EAPs) are starting to make a comeback by adding mental health to their list of offerings. Previously EAPs were mostly known for helping employees with drugs and alcohol abuse, or specific health issues. However, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has redefined EAPs to include mental health. A section from explains:

EAPs address a large and complex body of issues affecting mental and emotional well-being, such as alcohol and other substance abuse, stress, grief, family problems, and psychological disorders. EAP counselors also work in a consultative role with managers and supervisors to address employee and organizational challenges and needs.

The stigma around mental health has changed significantly within the past several years, with struggling employees openly speaking up about their issues. As business owners and their employees start to explore these issues further, the future is beginning to look brighter for mental health care in the workplace. Additionally, employers offering benefits that include mental health treatments for their employees will hopefully help to decrease the current extremely high-stress levels within the workforce.
